Custom Birthday Cakes Auckland: Designs, Prices & How to Order

What "custom" actually means

A custom cake is not simply a cake with a message on it. It is one designed around your celebration: the size chosen for your guest count, the flavour you actually want, the finish and colour palette, and often a shape or structure built for the occasion. Nothing is pulled from a cabinet — it is baked to order, and it is yours alone.

That distinction matters most when a supermarket or café cake will not do: a milestone birthday, a themed children's party, a cake that has to feed forty people, or one that needs to be gluten-free without looking or tasting like an afterthought.

The custom designs Auckland orders most

Number cakes

Shaped as an age — a 1, an 18, a 21, a 40. Typically a single tall tier, decorated with fresh flowers, macarons or piped detail. Very popular for first birthdays and milestone celebrations, and usually the most striking thing on the table.

Children's themed cakes

Unicorns, dinosaurs, superheroes, rainbows, favourite characters. We keep the decoration playful but the flavour grown-up enough that the adults go back for seconds — the most common feedback we get from parents is that the cake actually tasted good, not just looked good.

Fresh floral

Buttercream finished with real edible flowers or sugar florals. Elegant, timeless, and the style that photographs best in natural light.

Minimalist and modern

Clean lines, restrained palettes, sharp edges, often with a single gold-leaf or metallic accent. The Korean-style finish has become one of our most requested looks for adult birthdays.

Drip and chocolate-heavy designs

Ganache drips, chocolate shards, chocolate sails, layered textures. Rich, generous and unapologetic.

Photo, topper and macaron-topped cakes

An edible print of a favourite photograph, a figure or number topper you have chosen yourself, or a crown of macarons around the top.

What actually drives the price

Custom cake pricing in Auckland is not arbitrary, and it is worth understanding before you compare quotes. Six things move the number:

  • Size and servings. The single biggest factor. A cake for eight and a cake for forty are different jobs.
  • Tiers and structure. Each additional tier adds baking, filling, stacking, chilling and transport time. Tall and sculpted designs also need internal support.
  • Design complexity. A smooth buttercream finish takes a fraction of the time of hand-painted detail, sculpted figures or sugar work.
  • Dietary requirements. Gluten-free, vegan, eggless and dairy-free recipes are made in separate batches with different ingredients, and combinations take more testing to get right.
  • Decoration. Fresh flowers, macarons, gold leaf, custom toppers and edible printing all carry their own cost.
  • Lead time. A design with proper notice is more efficient to produce than one squeezed into a busy week.

As a general guide, our boutique cakes start at $70, and bespoke custom designs start at $120 — rising with size, tiers, decoration and complexity. Exact pricing comes from a quote, so you are never guessing.

Choosing a size

Size is where most people under-order. As a rough guide, a 6" round serves around 8–10, an 8" serves 14–18, and a 10" serves 24–30, depending on how generously you cut. A two-tier cake can be built to look generous for a crowd without being enormous.

Flavour

The classics are the classics for a reason — chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, lemon, carrot, caramel and banana. What separates a good custom cake is balance: ours are built to be moist and flavour-forward rather than aggressively sweet, which is why they suit children's parties and adult tables alike. We use Belgian couverture chocolate, real fruit purées, New Zealand butter and cream, and organic sugar.

Gluten-free, vegan and eggless

Every design on this page can be made to suit dietary needs — gluten-free, vegan, eggless or dairy-free, including combinations such as gluten-free and vegan together. These are not compromises on a standard recipe; they are developed in their own right, which is why customers regularly tell us you would not know the difference.

If you are ordering for a party where you are not certain of everyone's requirements, tell us and we will advise what works best.

How far ahead should you order?

Simple custom designs are usually fine with one to four days' notice. Anything involving sculpted work, multiple tiers, edible printing or fresh florals is better with one to two weeks.

Peak periods — the weeks around Christmas and New Year, school holidays, and the run-up to Mother's Day — book out well in advance. If your date matters, order early and we will confirm it rather than leave you hoping.

Last-minute and same-day cakes

Birthdays are not always planned. A selection of simpler designs can be turned around quickly, and we hold a limited number of orders each day so every cake is fresh and properly finished. Order by 9am for same-day availability.

Simple, single-tier designs with a clean finish are the most likely to be possible at short notice. Elaborate work genuinely cannot be rushed.

Can I supply my own topper?

Yes, and plenty of customers do — a laser-cut number, a figure from the party theme, a keepsake for the birthday person to take home afterwards. Let us know when you order so we can size the top of the cake accordingly.

Writing on the cake

We can pipe a short message on top, and most cakes can take a name and an age comfortably. Longer messages are better written on a card. You can also add a greeting card with your own message if the cake is a surprise being delivered directly.

Delivery and collection

Custom cakes are delivered across Auckland, or collected from our Papatoetoe kitchen. Delivery fees are based on your address and shown at checkout — see the delivery and pickup page for areas and timings, and our Auckland delivery guide for how cakes travel.

We recommend collection only for designs that travel easily. Tall, sculpted and cream-finished cakes are safer in our chilled transport than on a car seat.
